a) It used to be a 50 mph zone and you THOUGHT you were speeding at 55.
b) It IS a 45 mph zone and you THOUGHT you were speeding at 55.
c) It is a 45 mph zone and you WERE speeding at 61.
I don't understand what it is you want to fight. You mean you want to contest the fact that you were breaking the law?
I'd recommend that you take it up with the Connecticut legislature and see if they would be willing to make speeding a crime for everyone except YOU.
However, if you insist on going to court, I'd take this defense: "Your Honor, I saw the signs saying the speed limit was 45. However, I did not see the cop."

It seems that the USA has lost the "respect of the law." In the past the majority of the people did what was right.
Now it seems that people do not care whether they broke the law or not, but whether they can get out of the penalty!
KInd of like illegal aliens, drug dealers, thiefs, etc, they don't care what the law is, they just care about themselves.
Why is the speed limit 45? Because that is the speed limit (maximum not minimum) that is safe. It probably was a residential or semi-residential area. Was the speed limit lowered because of a lot of accidents there?
Take the punishment, you deserve it and be grateful that you did not hit some small child!
I laminated my last ticket and put it in the sun visor so that I will see it whenever I get into the car.

Look in the ticket, look it good, does it have any tipe of error, if it does thats the only way you can claim that you dont need to pay it, but if the cop is ritht on everithig that he wrote on it you have to pay it, it does not metter if you think that the speed limit was 50, you have to read the sings posted on the side of the road that tells you waht is the speed limit. Just because you did not know the law it does not mean it does not apply to you.

When they drop the speed limit they have a lot of obvious signs saying what the new one is. They are hard to miss including in that area. Thinking you were going at 55 is not an excuse worth going to court for - it is a guaranteed loser. Your problem is that you didn't think they would have a cop there to enforce it.

You can go to court and plead "not guilty", but if you thought you were going 55, and the speed limit was 45, then you have already admitted to breaking the law... I don't know how much success you will have.
