English is NOT the official language of the United States. The United States has never declared an official language. That's why many Americans really want to declare English as the official language. They are worried that soon Spanish-speakers will outnumber them and then make Spanish the official language.
(P.S. Columbus didn't colonize America. Great Britain did. He didn't even actually land in the US.)

Well, many people in the USA refuse to learn another language. They take it as a personal insult. Perhaps they lack the mental capacity to learn another language and they don't want to face that humiliation.
No, Columbus did not set foot on the USA.
About the majorities language, we shall change that majority very soon, just wait and see

Well, I think it is because of the European descendants from Britain during the 17th century - 20th century. They spoke an old way of English and over time, English has developed.
E.g. - Are you alright? (1997) / 'Ite (2007)
That is why most of you Americans speak English.
But the Spanish have claimed parts of America too. They're called Latinos and Hispanics. Spanish is USA's second official language.
The Dutch have come too for the fur trade. New York used to be called New Amsterdam! The Amish speak Dutch or Old German.
And Russian have come to Alaska, and the Native Americans, and the Italians, and the Africans, and oh it goes on.
It's an interesting question. Nice one. :D

It's simply historical. The majority of the people speak English, so why would any other language be the official one? However, as one of the other respondents said, I don't believe that it's ever actually been proclaimed as the official language. Everybody just speaks it, so by conventional it's "official".

Quit whining and be glad it's English. The official language is English by only ONE vote..... a very second runner up was German. Columbus was Portuguese, so no... he did not speak English. But those settlers at Jamestown certainly did... and the rest is history.

With time, dedication, petitions, more petitions, pressures and political will, Spanish may eventually become another official language in the US. Many cities (including New York and Boston already offer a variety of services in Spanish). Time will do its work.
