I am thinking of buying my first Digital SLR since my Compact needs replacing. I have looked at the Canon EOS400D (uk name) and the Nikon D50 etc - The nikon is a bit cheaper so I could also get additional lenses or accessories within my budget.

Or am I missing out on a better model/make?

Nikon D50 is one of the easiest to grow with. You can start with it fully auto and then slowly introduce features and buy new lenses ranging from fish eye to telephoto.

The Nikon has magnificent quality- the only issue is that the standard lens is somewhat.. well... "standard". Start small but bear in mind you will want to upgrade your lens over time.

The D50 borders on proffesional and has even been rated higher than the D70... once again what pulls it back is the lens that comes as standard.

I'm a little sad though- cause despite being a Nikon girl I have recomended a Canon to my Dad.... The Canon Powershot S3 IS is amazing as a point and shoot (with Zoom being his priority), but ultimately- If you want controll and to grow into Digital photography- the D50 will cover all your bases. The only upgrades are lenses, SD memory (always go Ultra II or higher as it's available- quicker write speed), and accessories.

I would also look at the Fuji SLRs.
