leap pad/leap frog. Is a learning tool for your kids. You need to buy special books to go with them. i bought one for my daughter for her second birthday, she's still a bit too young. you can get them at any department store. the unit itself cost me about $50 canadian, and the bookds are roughly $15-$25. They teach reading, math, counting, alpabets etc. the leap frog is for younger kids, and the books cannot be used with the leap pad. So they get you once your child is a little older. It's geared towards pre-schoolers and younger children.

There are a few different Leap Pad systems. From toddlers to around 11 years old. They run around $29. They are educational and we love them. Can reinforce writing, reading, math, language skills. As well as listening and following directions.
Here's what I found for you:
LeapPad® Learning System
Appropriate For Ages 4 to 8 Years

Open a LeapPad® Learning System and a whole world of learning opens up.

Put a book on the LeapPad player and pop in the cartridge. Stories suddenly come to life with the light tap of the Magic Pen. Touch a word and sound out each letter. Then spell it and define it. Silly songs serenade. Characters charm everyone with their hilarious sense of humor.

The award-winning LeapPad Learning System teaches fundamental reading skills in a way that keeps your child coming back again and again. The Magic Pen helps young readers practice critical pre-writing skills. The games will make them gleeful and the activities will keep them busy as bees.

Kids will be mesmerized with the possibilities of learning. And with over 50 titles to choose from, and all the books from the Quantum Pad® Library, they will stay mesmerized for quite a long time.

When books talk back, every word is an adventure. And with volume control, headphone jack and automatic shut-off, the books don't have to talk too loudly.

If your kid isn't even born yet, don't buy it yet. It'll be 3 years before your kid could use it! And the way technology changes, who knows if the same system will still be available by the time your kid is older. They may have totally changed it.

It is a good product. Depending on if you catch it on sale, the Leap Pad itself will run about $20-30. The books to go with it are about $10-15 each.

We have a first leap pad (3 to 6) and it is designed to help pre-readers and pre-schoolers. There are many fun games including rhyming and math, ABC's and old fashioned listening and comprehension.

My daughter loves hers. It cost about 35 dollars for the first leap pad.... the game cartridges are between 10 and 15 each.

It is pretty expensive (I've heard everything from $30 to $50). It basically teaches your kid to read for you. It reads to the kid, and then the kid can try to read for him/herself while using a pen to sound out the hard words.

I say don't buy one. You should be teaching your child to read, not a machine. It makes me sad when parents come into my bookstore and admit to not reading to their children or helping them learn to read...

Wait till your child is born and gets older.

They are always coming out with new stuff.
