I eventually got some dumb bells, but before I needed them I used bottled water, bags (or pillowcases) holding things like bags of beans, canned foods, and body weight.

Look around on the web for free weight or dumb bell exercises. WIth these, it's all about gravity's direction to your body. The most important thing is to make sure your joints are being used properlly. Don't strain them. Things should bend, when possible, along the correct axis and shouldn't go past 90 degrees. Strain them and they will be damaged - not good!

Major strength training exercises for your large muscle groups would be squats for legs, pushups or dumb bell presses (on your back), or dumb bell flies - these can be done with anything you can grip, and rows for your back. If you have stairs, you can use those for both strength and for cardio.

Some aerobics videos are also excellent. They make them for mostly cardio, or mostly strength, or a complete combination. If you're doing strength training exercises, you probably only need the videos for cardio. That is, if you don't want to just go jogging outside.

I would suggest pushups, squats, hand stands, and two ball pushups( you grab two basketballs, place them shoulder width apart palce your hands on them and start doing pushups) these are more concentrated. You could also do lunges.
