What an awful way to experience your first child. I am so glad to hear that you have received help for your post partum depression/psychosis, make sure you keep taking your medication no matter how good you are feeling and continue to meet with your doctor and counselor in a regularly scheduled basis.

It is not normal for a person to have sexual thoughts about their child or children in general. It can be the sign of a serious mental health issue. Please make sure that your doctors are aware of these thoughts. You did not mention if you have continued having these thoughts since being put on Prozac (be careful Prozac has some pretty scary side effects so if you are feeling the same as before or not feeling a big difference talk to your doctor immediately). If you continue to have these thoughts while taking medication I would really like to see you put a safety plan into place so ensure that you and your child are safe. Is there someone you can call no matter what time it is, is the a 24 hour hot line for mental health issues that you can call.......please set up a safety plan for all your sakes!

Post partum depression/psychosis does not last forever and you will get past it......just make sure you have a support system in place in the mean time for both you and your child.

best of luck!

I'm glad you got some help. I wonder if this is more of an OCD thing than a psychosis -- an unwanted thought that recurs. Your mind just goes to whatever is most unacceptable and worries that you're going to do that thing. Sexual thoughts are common, as are fears of harming someone you love or fear of contamination. (See, if you'd had fear of contamination -- oh no, I have to be super-clean or my baby's going to get sick -- it would have seemed more appropriate but could have been just as debilitating).

It's good you sought help -- you could develop rituals to avoid doing it and that's very tiresome. Since you're on Prozac, that makes me think it is an OCD thing, not a psychotic problem. I hope it removes this problem thought, but one thing you can do is to just realize it's an obsession, or if possible, to use humor.

So I don't think you would act on your thought. I'm so glad you got help and hope you're feeling better. Do you get enough help and support? It's such an overwhelming time in your life, and if you can get assistance with housework and someone to talk to, it would be very helpful I believe.

I once saw a story on the news about a woman who felt sexually stimulated when she nursed her child. She called a breast feeding support group who in turn reported her to children's services. She in turn lost custody of her child for many months until the story was brought to the media. The media then changed the story to how common these types of feelings and thoughts are during the post-partum period. They stressed the importance of getting professional help from a specialist. So, as the others said....get help ASAP so you can enjoy your new baby.

i agree with rcpeabody.
what are you having are intrusive thoughts. these are common with people with OCD.
i belong to an online OCD support group and can tell you that during pregnancy and especially after the birth of a child...its common that these unwanted thoughts arise. they are horrible, and im so sorry you are going through this. when my kids were born...i went though it too but my thoughts were violent. i would visualise hurting them, and worse. :( i set up traps for myself so if i got out of bed to hurt them...i would wake myself up and snap out of it. at that time i didnt know about intrusive thoughts and how they work.
its like this...your mind comes up with the thing that is most horrific to you ...and plays it over and over in your head til you wonder if you are capable of actually doing these things. most intrusive thoughts are about people we love and would NEVER want to harm. you WILL get through this.

despite what people are saying about prozac....please know that it can be a lifesaver. it was for me.the side effects were minor compared to the benefit of getting my mind back.
hang in there sister. you are not alone...xox
