i find if i hurry while i'm eating that i get the hiccups, thought i wasn't letting enough air get in or out.

A muscle spasm of the diaphram is a hiccup. It's caused by a lack of oxygen.

I've heard that your diaphragm (the breathing one, you sicko ; ) ) is spasming from being out of whack with your usualy breathing cycle. this video is great at summarizing and demonstrating pointers to get rid of them:
