That happens to a lot of managers. If they get sacked then they are in breach of their contracts (bad results, not finishing high enough etc) but by mutual consent, they get paid off and in return keep their mouths shut.

Probably the same reasons as any professional job in any area.
I've had folks that after a good chance, failed to come up to scratch by a long chalk.
I will not dismiss someone, even after the statutary warnings for going missing, negligence, incompetence etc.
I am not a grumpy, indeed help folks along with personal issues, training, socially & dear knows what, but you need the right folks for the tasks in hand.
I therefore give the option of offering a letter of resignation, to preserve their CV in a move to a more suitable job.
Same in sports, I guess.
