He seems to to have these sneezing fits when he starts to purr. He's been to the Dr. twice and they say he's healthy. He also has an eye that runs very often. I'm starting to get concerned after a major fit this morning. I'm starting to avoid petting him in the chance the purring is the cause of his sneazing fits. I'm bewildered. Any advice would be great.

Take him to a different vet. It could be anything from a cold to serious Rhino and many thing in between. This is serious, if his nose gets blocked he won't smell his food and will hardly eat. Same if his throat gets really sore. Cats don't die of a cold, but they do die of starvation and other complications.

your cat's symptoms alone could be a few things such as something in his eye or something in his nose making it irritating so he sneezes, but the combined symptoms if pretty clear that that cat has a cold. The first sign of a cold is a sneeze and often the sneezing goes away in a few days. If the cold continues then you begin to see the watery redden eyes as you have said. Again cats are AMAZING creatures and this cat would probably get better but who wants a cat to suffer?? Their are liquid and pill form antibiotics to clear up your kitty's sneezing ad eye. Also without knowing the cat's history their are other things to know, but your cat appears to have a cold which is extremely common and can be easily cured. It can get very bad and turn into a severe upper respiratory problem which can cause green pus and in the nose and difficult breathing. I would also go to a different vet for another opinion.. For example I saved a cat that had severe upper res problem and the vet actually wanted to remove the cat's eye because it was so bad... I took the cat to another vet and that vet saved the cat's eye.. to this day this adult cat has a runny eye and is completely healthy but it had severe scarring so it's tear duck was damaged... Good luck on your kitty... two opinions at the minimum!!

Has he been to the Vet during the time he has been sneezing with the runny eye? Usually this is an Upper Respiratory Infection, which can get pretty bad if left untreated. The symptoms for URI include one or more:
sneezing quite a bit, sounds "wheezy" or has fluid sounds in lungs, runny eyes, drippy nose, lack of appetite, sleeping more than usual, coughing.

This IS very contagious to other cats, kittens and adults alike. We mostly see it in kittens, especially if they have come from shelters or SPCA adoptions.

It is nothing that starts out as life-threatening (we would equate it to a cold in a human), but sometimes the cats do not eat or drink during this time, which can be super harmful to them, as they dehydrate quickly and not eating can cause very severe liver damage, even if they are off food for just a couple of days.

I'd recommend scheduling an appointment with the vet and checking it out. Sometimes a cat may be simply having a time with something in the home irritating his sinuses (smoke, getting into very dusty places, etc) but it sure does sound like the start of the classic upper respiratory infection.

And...if you are worried, seeing his doctor would help ease your mind as well :)

Good luck!

I'm wondering if he's allergic to something try changing his food and the type of litter your using if the vet said everything is okay well, I'd call the vet back and tell him about the eye, and tell him the cat is still sneezing and youv'e aready paid for a diagnosis so make sure this is a low charge or a freebie. He must have some sort of virus or bacteria especially if the eye is involved. Good luck

It could be a sign of conjunctivitis, kind of like humans. the eyes get a little puffy around the rim and somewhat red. I had a litter of kittens a few weeks ago, when they were born they all had conjunctivitis in their eyes. The vet continuously asked if they sneezed alot, so i would recommend taking him to the vet and checking him out, i know a vet visit is pretty pricey but the care of your kitten is priceless, they need to be really healthy because of their age their immune system isnt so good.

Sneezing might mean he has the flu. My puppy sneezes too when the temperature is cold. I don't think that petting him causes sneezing at all. You might want to give him some vitamins. But I don't thin k it's a big deal. He'll be ok.

Hello there, i just adopted my kitten from a shelter & he has the cat flu, he is sneezing & his left eye is running also....they gave me anti biotics which he takes twice a day, the main thing they said to worry about is if he was not eating , if he didnt eat for 24 hours i had to take him back.....Maybe your cat needs antibiotics, but if the vet has checked it out i am not sure, i understand your concern tho.....best wishes

He might be allergic to some thing. My cat is allergic to dust. Puring could just be Sturing up bacteria that he needs to get out.

I AM A VET!! He may have kennel cough. My cat had that too and he had all of the symptoms your cat is having. When cats come in with those symptoms I give them medicine and they are better within weeks.
