Because they can't see the window when the light waves don't reflect back to them at a certain time of the day. They simply cannot see the barrier, so they fly straight through at full speed head first.
In order to get them to stop, you get attractive decals on the glass that you can peel off later or hang sun catchers to reflect the light so that it frightens them away.
If you like birds, hang feeders around your window to watch the different species visit you and eat every day.
You will see some interesting and colorful breeds during migration seasons.

First let us assume that you don't have a bird yourself, as wild birds will seek out and destroy a domesticated species. If no bird is present in the home, your windows are very clean and transparent to the birds. Some people have asked you to place decals on your glass which may in fact work but I use wind chimes made of bamboo. Birds will hear the noise and flee instead of chancing the unseen decal on a window. Also you can post a sign that says ...hey birdies beware my window pane is installed and down.....LOL!! Just kidding but the previous solution works very well.

I've seen this happen before. There is a coating you can put on the outside of windows the prevents people from seeing in. It reflects back to the bird so it thinks it's seeign whats behind in front of them so they don't realize there is even a window :( See if it's on yours too. This was a long time ago and I have no ida how to take it off once it's on but must be a way. Hope so!

WEll because 1.they see their reflection and fight it or 2.they don't see the glass and think they can fly through the window.
SOLUTION: you can go to a pet store or wal-mart or even canadian-tire and buy stickers shaped like hawks to put on your window in a corner, the light from your room makes the sticker appear of a larger bird as a shadow on the ground
after I put those stickers on my window, we haven't have a bird crash into our window in 3 years

This happens at my mom's all the time. I'd recommend putting some sorta decal in the window, maybe a light catcher or something that the birds can see. They can't see that its glass and not just something to flew through. Mom put some stained glass light catchers on her window and not soo many have hit it recently.

As you may already know, birds have different eyes than us. The reason why they keep hitting the window is because they see no window and they think they can fly through it. I recommend putting up curtains or blinds so birds don't get confused and smash into the window.

Had the same at my old house...
You can do any of the following to stop this from happening.
Close the drapes, shade, blind or whatever
Buy any plastic EZ peel decals and stick them on the glass
Hang anything highly visible in front of your window.
Close the drapes, shade etc on the other windows in the room.
Good luck!!

DON'T USE WINDEX haha sorry I had to say that, but make your windows a little messier, or put screens on them, put stickers, Idk, make them know that there is a solid hard substance right there. haha, no offense but I'd really enjoy watching a bird fly into a window, I know I've walked into sliding glass doors plenty of times... sigh... XD

Rickety, rackety, now, now, now! Hitchcock weird and spooky! Well, put some decals on your window. Perhaps they just don't see the glass.
