The meaning of this term has changed over the years several times. Originally, it was said as a neutral reference to the majority of nations and people that set in a certain land. The Pharisees used this term as a decrying name. Other uses of this term in the bible refer to the gentiles, to the people of Israel in Egypt, to the simple people of Israel (as opposed to the priests)...
