Shoot it. Sure, it might be dead afterwards but at least it won't be stuck in a tree.

Years ago when I was working in a small town, the fire chief refused to go rescue a cat from a tree. He said, "You never find cat bones in trees. That's because they come down when they're ready." Put out kitty's favorite food and keep an eye on the situation. If kitty stays there too long, call your local fire department and see if they will help. If they won't and you end up using a ladder, make sure you have someone there to keep it steady and spot you while you're putting the cat into the backpack.

My father was a fireman for many years. He told me once, "You don't see any cat skeletons in trees." I assume this to mean that the cat will come down at some point. The other alternative is to get up in the tree close enough to grab the animal. I have seen a number of patients with injuries related to tree climbing, tree trimming and use of ladders. Please be careful.

Put some tuna in a bowl by the base of the tree, and leave the cat be. It will come down when it's good n ready.

I usually sweet talk the cat and either climb the tree or get a ladder to make it feel like its safe to come down to me. Beware of the inevitable clawing action that occurs if you don't hold on tightly to your cat while descending the ladder!

Open a can of the stinkiest cat food you can find, put it at the base of the tree the cat is in, call the cat telling her/him food is here, then leave. (don't let other dogs or cats to get the food first)

If you have a ladder, put it up against the tree and see if kitty will come down using it. Keep calling but don't frighten the cat anymore - it might just climb higher. Coax him down with his favorite food.

Shot gun or fire department. When I was on the fire department I even got called to get an iguana out of a tree. It was so high up we finally had to us the high pressure hose and have a safety net ready. It fell 50 feet and was uninjured. I was secretary/treasurer at the time and it took a lot of paper work. This was a pet in the Mid-west here.

Some cats, especially kittens, are afraid of heights, although they get up, they are afraid to come down. Call the fire department, they will help with a ladder.

a dog chased my kitten up a tree. after four days we called our local VFD. first they tried the ladder, *he went up the tree* we tried everything...food, toys, they had to hose him....he hit the roof, and ran all the way home. he was wet, but he didn't wander off anymore...
if you use a ladder....take a back pack to put him in, you do not want to be up there and get clawed.
