I'm a new mam with a 4 month old baby, so I don't get much time to myself. I'm going to a wedding in May and I would like to either or and lose my baby weight and tone up by then. I've got no confidence to go to the gym by myself. I have a few pieces of exercise equipment but no motivation. I have also recently been diagnosed with an serverly under active thyroid. Any tips, ideas anything to do with anything mentioned above would be a great help.

First of all, ensure that you are being treated for your underactive thyroid, usually with levothyroxine tablets. This will need to be monitored with blood tests to ensure that the dose is right for you.

Secondly, see if you can meet people in a similar situation (for example at a mother & baby group) and you can encourage each other. Once you have some motivation, you have the difficult-but-not-impossible job of fitting in exercise around looking after your baby. One idea is to take your baby in the pram and go for a walk every day - even if it's ony short; you both get fresh air, you get exercise and you're with your baby.

You don't say whether you have ever had a weight problem before, or what your diet is like, but obviously if you have always been happy with your weight before, this is just a blip caused by pregnancy or hypothyroidism. If your diet is not healthy, try to improve it, but don't cut down too much, you need energy to look after your baby. If you are breast-feeding, nutrition is even more important, and I believe that breast-feeding can help you lose pregnancy weight.

Also, to lose 4 stone in 4 or 5 months is really too rapid, and you run the risk of saggy skin. Aim to lose about half of the weight and tone up a bit by May, and don't forget to give yourself small targets along the way, and reward yourself when you reach them.

Finally, don't get too obsessed about your weight. Remember that you have to look after yourself and your baby, which is much more important than looking slim. And, at the wedding, attention will be on the bride, not you, so don't worry too much if you don't lose enough weight before then.

Good luck.

Your thyroid problem may have been a contributing factor to your weight gain, as it is likely to have lowered your basal metabolic rate, so you need to get that sorted first with appropriate medication.

Stop buying exercise equipment which then just dusts under your bed or DVDs that never get used. Why not get some running shoes and a running buggie to put the baby in??

May is lets say 4 months away. That gives you 16 weeks timed by 2 pounds of healthy weight loss per week = 32 pounds you could realistically shed by then.

The good news is that women who breastfeed will actually lose weight faster than those who don't. With that in mind however, a breastfeeding woman should not lose more than four pounds per month. It doesn't help either that you may be hungrier while breastfeeding as a mechanism to make sure that your diet is nutrient rich.

I found you an article on Postpartum Weight Loss After Having New Baby.

PS Gyms are not as bad as you think. They are certainly not full of hunks and models. People exercise for all kinds of reasons. Some people come to a gym to get slim, or healthy, or because they're bored, or training for an event, or have just broken up with someone or bereaved. The place is full of people from all walks of life. Why not at least take a look?? You could get a personal trainer for a couple of months to set you up with a programme.

Get the thyroid thing treated because that will make it harder. Forget the gym, find an exercise you enjoy. Exercise equipment is great if you use it, try combining your exercise session with watching your favourite TV show. If it annoys the rest of the family.......tough on them, your health and well being is top priority. If you don't take care of yourself your can't take care of anybody else. For easy and sustainable weight loss you can't beat weight watchers in my opinion. If you can't get to the meetings try it online. Your goal is a very hard one to achieve. For a woman the average safe weight loss a week is around 1lb, but if you make changes you can live with rather than going on a "Diet" which will probably make you miserable and once you come off it the weight will go back on, by may you will be well on the way to the figure you want.

Good luck

I am sure your doctor has already prescribed you the replacement therapy for your hypothiroidism.

He must have recommended you to have regular blood level of T3 T4 & TSH. you should stick to this regularly.

Once the thyroxine is optimally controlled your weight should come down with a simple dieting.

I STRESSED that unless you are euthyroid (normal Thyroid functions) no dieting or exercise will drop your weight.

I would have thought that the doc would have prescribed thyroxine tablets if you have an under active thyroid. Once you have started taking these, the weight should start to come off providing you are eating sensibly and exercising, as the thyroxine does increase your metabolism.

The best advice I can give you is to learn more about being hypothyroid. Know your test results and what they mean. For most people to lose weight while hypo they need their TSH around 1.0 if they are on Synthoid or Levoxyl or one of the other T4 medications. For someone on a T4/T3 combo, they need the Free t4 to be at least mid-range and the free t3 to be high in range.

I have included a link below for you to learn more about your condition. Only then will you know what is best for you to lose weight. Good luck. I'm hypothyroid too.

Thyroid disease is one of the most common health problems we face today. From a practical standpoint, there are many ways to approach this issue. Learn here https://tr.im/2lXoJ

Hypothyroidism, or underactive thyroid, is a very common problem, and there are many reasons for this, including drinking chlorinated and fluoridated water, and eating brominated flour.

Chlorine, fluoride, and bromine are all in the same family as iodine, and can displace iodine in your thyroid gland.

Secondly, many people simply aren't getting enough iodine in their diet to begin with. The amount you get from iodized salt is just barely enough to prevent you from getting a goiter.

Download your favourite tracks to work out to. If you’ve committed to a half hour session per day then a 30-minute soundtrack of the most upbeat, motivating tunes will retain you pumped up!
