Irfanview is a free of charge, spyware/adware free program that can do exactly what you're looking for. Just make sure during the installation process you don't opt to install the eBay toolbar.

Simply open your image, select Image at the top, and convert it into a grayscale image.

Hope this helps!

If you want to convert them from color to black n white, you can do it through image or graphics programs like Photoshop, GIMP, Photoimpressions, etc. You can also change the color in MS Publisher once you've added the picture to a page. I tend to use an graphics program as I like to change pictures to sepia, giving it that old look. You can also set the printer to print in pure black and white, if you want to print it on photo paper.

GIMP is free. http://www.gimp.org/

With whatever photo software you have, go to the help section and type "black and white" or "desaturate" (I believe that is the photoshop term which turns a photo black and white) and see if it shows you how to change your picture thus. Good luck.

You will need some type of photo editing software. If you scanned the photo, the scanner probably came with software allowing you to do this.

If you are just printing it, don't use the color on your printer!

Try using picassa. It's free, you can download it from the web, it will allow you to archive and edit your photos including crop, clean up and turn them to black and white. And you can resize them easily so they will be webready. I use photoshop and picassa and like picassa because it works faster.

For printing, you can choose Grayscale. That's generally the term I've come across for B/W printouts. As for saving it in B/W, that depends on the program.
