I've never been to the Caribbean but am looking to go there with a friend to relax on beautiful beaches, snorkel & enjoy a relatively good but chilled nightlife in terms of bars and restaurants.
Am worried that Jamaica & Bahamas are too developed with too many all inclusives which we're trying to avoid? But on the other hand, other islands seem not to mention any nightlife on the net - just hotel bars.
Have I got the wrong impression and can anyone recommend any other islands?

My absolute favorite island in the caribbean is St. Barth's. It is very pricey, but I think it is what you are looking for. If you go in the off season, the rates drop dramatically. It is a French island and it is very chic and amazing.

The restaurants will blow your mind. I have never had one bad meal here yet! We go 2 times a year and we have been to numerous islands and this by far is "THE" best. There are NO resorts here, high rises, condos, American companies, adn certailnly no over development.

You have to fly to St. Maarten first, and then you take a small little plane about a 10 minute flight over to St. Barth's. (Or ferry, but the plane is much faster..the ferry is about 1 - 1 1/2 hours.)

The beaches are all so beautiful here. My favorite is Saline and St. Jean. Go to expedia.com and look for a package. The airport code is SBH. Another good forum for discussion on this beautiful island is www.stbartstalk.com

www.stbarth.com is another website that you can look for villas to rent.

Good luck with your travels! (FYI...the day after Easter is when prices drop.)

Also, as far as nightlife....FABULOUS!!! There is Casa Nikki, Nikki Beach, Le Ti, Yacht club...The French really know how to PARTY!!! go to www.nikkibeach.com

Barbados. Plenty of nightlife in the evening (drinks free events happen almost nightly), and there of course are the beautiful beaches. It's easy to get around the island and if you need daytime activities aside from the beach, you can do anything from catamarans, rum distillery tours, the Barbados museum, island safari, etc. There aren't many all inclusives like some of the other islands...you can rent apartments or villas for just about any budget & if you're on the south or west coast, they are usually within walking distance to banks & grocery stores.

There is Oistins on the weekend where there are numerous vendors selling fish dinners (really good). There are sports bars, beach bars...and plenty going on since the island is preparing for World Cup Cricket this spring. In July - August is Cropover time so there are many parties to attend (the best time is last week of Jul - 1st week of August).

Worked in the Carib for 4 years. Try Barbados (West Coast/st.James) is best. Recommend Buccaneer Bay hotel).
Flying Fish for Breakfast, food excellent but pricey. Locals very friendly. Hope all the passengers from cruise liners haven't spoilt the atmosphere. Ed.

The Dominican Republic... many young Canadians flock there every winter. If you are Canadian, Cuba is nice.
