I normally reach over and unlock the driver's door after I get in a friend's car so she can immediately open the driver's door without keys. But if i am with a man or on a date, what are the rules of etiquette? I would like to open the driver's door to be courteous to the other person but in the process look ackward reaching over and lose my poise.

I'm not sure what the proper ettiquette is, but I go with common courteousy if he doesn't have power locks and unlock the door for him, especially since he's opened the door for me. There's proper etiquette and common decency and I go for common decency every time. Use your judgement. I don't think you'll lose your poise, as he won't see you because he'll be walking around the automobile to get to the driver's side. Happy New Year.

I was thinking back over the years and remembering how different scenarios played out regarding the unlocking of doors.

Actually, I think that this kind of action may actually go beyond etiquette to practicality.

For one thing, I never considered it problem one way or the other if the girl unlocked the door or not. If she did, fine, but I already had my key in my hand, so if she didn't, I really didn't even give it a second thought.

Certainly, it is appreciated, but I don't think guys actually pay that much attention to it. But he will if she does unlock it. That's funny to think about because like I say, he has the key in his hand anyway so I just don't think of it as an issue.

Have you ever seen the movie a BRONX TALE??? One of the men in that film urges another man to use this as a test on a young lady.

Yes , you should lean over and unlock the door for him !

If you are on a date with a man it is proper to let him do the manly things like open doors for you, open your car door and get his own door. I know nowadays women and even I cross that line and sometimes get doors for myself. Yes, it is courteous to open it for him from the inside and after you have been on more dates with him and know him better it is okay to do that.

well I did that once one a first date and the guy said that I was going to be his wife. I guess he was right, 10 years later were still married. so I think it's o.k. to unlock the door for the driver.

Unlocking the door for him is the proper think to do. He will appreciate it and not even notice if you lost your poise!

It shows that you are thoughtful if you unlock the door. Just nudge him and tell him to upgrade to power locks. :)

forget date, just think courtesy. if he was nice enough to open your door, you should be nice enough to unlock his. if you were with another woman and she unlocked your door you should unlock hers for her. just follow the Golden Rule.

Definetly unlock the door. Went on a first date and I did that he appreciated that so much and he remembered it later.
