I have a nice big bundle of sage and am ready to smudge my surroundings. However, I want to do this right and not superficially. Any advice, thanks.

Anything you do from your heart will not be superficial.
I first smudge myself, and then go through each and every room of the house using a feather or even just your hand to waft the smoke into every nook and cranny.

If you have a "sacred feather" or a feather you've purified (you CAN use a hand if you've no feather), light your bundle (with something under the bundle to catch the ash, it'll be a real bad thing if you burn your surroundings). Move the smoke, fanning with your feather, in a clockwise direction and an UPWARD motion. Picture the negative energy being purified. You can also say a prayer of your choice as you work. You may smudge yourself as well, thereby purifying your own self.

Things to keep in mind. ALWAYS move clockwise when doing something creative. Clockwise AROUND the room to the corners (if a standard house and not a yurt or some of the newer domiciles) and the smoke at the same time in a clockwise manner.

Hope this helps.

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you're doing it to banish negativity, go around your house Widdershins (counterclockwise) with the sage. But if you're doing it to add positive energy, go Deosil (clockwise) around your house. If it's a little bit of both, pick which one you're more concerend about, repelling negative forces or inviting positive forces. Be sure to give much attention to windows, mirrors and corners in the walls, as these are considered gateways. Blessed be.

Let me ask you something seriously. Since this process is from American Indians and they did it for hundreds of years in their respective Teepees, wig-wams, etc. How much protection did it give THEM? Think about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They died by the thousands and thousands. A sucker is born every minute.
