I have two parakeets one is a girl and one is a boy and I want to have a baby bird. How do I know when my bird is doing it? and how do i know when she wants to lay an egg? Also recently they've been screaming a lot especially the girl bird and she usually doesn't scream why?

Most pet stores that deal with birds will sell you a nesting box for parakeets for around 10 dollars. Use string and bits of non toxic paper so they can build a nest in it.You can also buy this for a small price. Feed them a good pelleted food with no more than10% of their diet being made of seed. Feed them a few fruits and veggies daily. No avocados, no chocolate and some say no grape seeds. Add a teaspoon of chopped cooked egg with the shell 3 times a week. The trick is to avoid malnutrition. It takes protein, energy and calcium to lay eggs. The male will mount the female for 1-3 seconds. That is what copulation between birds is like. If conditions are right there will be chicks 21-26 days after the last egg is layed. If they do not mate, don't worry and take care of them regardless. All seed diets are now considered harmful to birds. Good luck. Let the parents feed their chicks. Start handling and weaning them at about 5 weeks. Have a tweet year.

It really depends on the species, but in most cases I say no. If you have a wild bird, I'd strongly suggest that it be brought to a wildlife rehabilitation center. They'll know what to do. If you can't bring it to them, perhaps they'll have ideas. Some birds are strict insectivores while babies. They can eat over 100 fruit flies a day. Others, such as crows, can eat canned dog food and ground beef. Parrots and small finches such as Zebra finches and society (Bengalese) finches will do well on a mixture that can be bought from any pet store. Similac tends to be high in iron and lactose, neither of which is good for passerines (perching birds such as sparrows, cfrows and even chickens!). Lactose is bad for birds in general, though some birds seem to be able to handle it. If all else fails, find a vet that does birds. They may have contacts w've not heard of here on Y! Answers :-) Good luck!

Don't know about the screaming. To breed the keets you need a large cage -- some call it a flight cage -- and you need a nesting box and nesting material like strips of cloth. Also you need to improve on their diet by supplementing it with small celery leaves, vitamins, cuttle bone and maybe even a meal worm or two each day. Diets for keets are available on the Internet.
