If you know for sure it's a cyst I wouldn't worry about it unless it is irritating to the dog.

If you don't know for sure it's a cyst, or if it's irritating the dog you should visit the vet.

My heeler chow had a sebacious cyst on her back. Vet looked at it several times over a few years when we were visiting about other things, no pain, just a bump, never bothered the dog, so we left it alone. It slowly grew to about 1-1/4 inches and stuck out about an inch. Sometimes it would get scraped during play or something. One day I reached down to pet her and it was oozing crud. I had to clean it up (think gigantic pimple full of black goo - didn't smell bad and was black because she's a black dog) syringed it out with hydrogen peroxide a few times (don't do this unless you know what you are doing) shave the area, hot pack it several times a day for two weeks to keep it draining and give her antibiotics (I keep a full round of dog antibiotics on hand for emergencies) so the area wouldn't get infected. It was pretty gross to have to deal with. Now it's just a little bump of a scar...
I did a bunch of reading when this happened and watched her carefully for signs that we needed to see a vet. One thing I found in my reading is that the 'wall' or 'sac' of the cyst often begins to fill with 'stuff' again, so I am watching the scar carefully. The vet and I had planned to remove the cyst if she had to go down for any other reason, and I will discuss this with her again next time we visit.

So..the short answer, yes, they can go away sometimes, but it might require assistance from you. Be sure that you've discussed it with your vet and don't do any home treatments unless you know what you are doing.

Most cysts do not truly go away by themselves. The "filling" can come and go, but once the space is there it will continue to fill periodically. If it's small though, I would generally leave it be unless the dog is irritating it at all.

Hmm, my dog has never had one, but then she is just a puppy (3 months old). I would just take her to the vet and ask him just to be safe. You never know, it might just be a harmless cyst, but it could be a deadly tumor or even cancer, so please go to the vet.

My vet told me he would not worry about my dog's cyst unless it got larger..which it did eventually as she got older. So he opted to remove it when he spayed her.
