There's no law against it specifically by the government, however it is probably against company policy.

Hi mjkittell : This is a good question and I would suggest that you check the laws in your state/county,Each state varies in these laws and I would suggest that you check them out so you will get the right information; I'm sure you wouldn't want to pay a fine for doing something that you didn't get the right information on. Being a bartender can be kinda hard if you don't know the laws of serving the public..Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question and you need to ask questions from the people that make these laws.By the way doesn't your boss have this information for you to look at??

Where it is and where it's not I can't say. What I can say is that it's a bad idea to do so. You are responsible for the actions and safety of everyone in your bar. You are responsible for inventory going out and money coming in. You are responsible for knowing who has had how much in what amount of time. Allot on your shoulders for six bucks an hour isn't it? Are you sure you want to be drinking? Customers will offer to buy you drinks in exchange for tips or to say thanks for good service. There are many ways to avoid trouble that will come of this. Pour the drink and put it aside, telling the customer thanks, I'll have after I close. Or tell the customer to wait until closing time and you can have it together then. And so on. This is a job. What would you think if a pilot started kicking back shots while in the cockpit?

Professionalism.

That's up to your employer. But since the law makes the bar and the bartender responsible for the actions of drunken patrons, it's doubtful an employer wants his or her employees' judgment impaired.
