Hard to be sure, isn't it? My own theory (not even at the level of "belief") is that we are in some sense reincarnated, destined to do it over and over until we get it right. But I would also agree that there is a sense in which we return to the Earth itself, whether by rotting of the flesh or dispersal of the cremated remains, and become a part of all that goes on.
When Steve was alive, I told him what I wanted of him was to have me cremated, mix my ashes with potting soil, pot some pot in the potting soil, and smoke me.
I had Steve cremated when he died, but I'm waiting until it is legal, coward that I am.

Many people say that we have a soul, and they say that the soul lives on after the body dies. They say that Lazarus’ soul was alive somewhere. But the Bible does not say that. It says that God made the first man Adam “a living soul.” Not, Adam was given a soul.
Adam himself was a soul. The Bible also says that when Adam sinned, he died. He became a “dead soul,” and he returned to the dust from which he had been made. The Bible also says that all Adam’s offspring inherited sin and death too.—Genesis 2:7; 3:17-19; Numbers 6:6; Romans 5:12.
Clearly, then, we do not have a soul that is separate from our body. Each one of us is a soul. And since people have inherited sin from the first man, Adam, the Bible says: ‘The soul that sins will die.’—Ezekiel 18:4.
When a person dies, his soul goes to Sheol/hell,grave/Hades. (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

It depends from what religion's perspective you ask this question. I can tell you that my religion says that once a person days their soul goes to another world named the purgatory world. Everybody will stay their until judgment day. Now while souls live in that world some that are good are in rest while others will be in pain since they can still be purified in that world if their sins are not that much. Once day of judgment comes and that's basically the end of the world, every soul shall be judged by God and sent either to hell or heave.
I hope that makes sense.

(Ezekiel 18:4) 4 Look! All the souls—to me they belong. As the soul of the father so likewise the soul of the son—to me they belong. The soul that is sinning—it itself will die.
According to the bible the soul will die, that means not existing.

Back from where it came to God
genesis 2:7. the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
I believe (the breath of life) is the soul!

so far no one has come back to tell us what a horrible place it is
I say know what to live for, before believing why to die for (religion)
how can we make today a better place and improve the life of those around us now, including our own, now?

I believe that your soul lives on forever. When you die it will go one of two places to await judgment. Heaven or hell. It depends on weather you died in your sins or not.

Either heaven (through having Jesus Christ as your personal savior) or hell. There is no other choice. There is no such thing as purgatory.
