soundslike an old set that has had many hours of almost continuos use.
if the hiss stops when the set is slapped then it could be a wire that has come loose and is casuing the hiss noise due to a bad electrical connection.
however as another person pointed out it could be thje tube on its way out. time to start saving to get a new TV or get this one professionally serviced.
in the mean time do not leave the set on at all. preferably keep the set switched OFF until it has been serviced.
the fault you are describing could cause a fire.
also check that you have been using the correct rated fuse for your TV. Most TVs require only a 3amp Fuse in the UK.

I'm a fprmer subway mechanic (retired) thus electronics tech. Never slap an electronics devivice they have gotten too fragile. It worked on electrical devices for loose connections but greatly shortens the life.
I bet you have pets or kids, kids are pets that are louder, hairier, more expensive. As a former soldier it goes, guns, aircover, pets, fuel air, bomb, pets, nukes, kids, wives
Sounds like you have developed a thermal (don't mind what it means but if let untreated your TV will fail then some one who knows about electronics will see it at the curb and fix it for nothing)
Unplug it.
Take off the back carefully saving all the screws
Look inside if you have a lot of hir or dust remember the TV develops a static charge that attracts dust. If you have a felt like coating on parts of the tv some splilt pop on the dust and this happened. Still don't worry.
Take a vacuum hose end and without touching the parts cleaning. Use a small child type paint brush to brush off the dust esp the "felt". A thermal means a part covered with dust got hot and srarted the hissing. Bang it knock off some of the dust it stops. For a while. You need to do this about once or twice a year depending on where you live.
Next the inside speaker connections and leads, (the other ends of the wires to the speaker need to be checked. Unless they are soldered (fat chance) make sure they are tight. While the back is off look for loose connections in general. Don't touch the tube or parts on the right as you have the back off 15,000 volts isa nasty shock.
Replace back, plug in, turn on (lots of people forget that part) enjoy

Stop slapping it and get it looked at by a technician before something expensive goes bang. Un-natural noises from inside a television set are nearly always a sign of something potentially fatal (to it) happening.

hissing like a cat? could be the picture tube if it's an old tv. watch out for sparks and for any thing that smells like it's burning. you might want to unplug it.

ok proper answer now, if its hissing its not going to be your tube, if it goes when you bang it , its 90% certain to be a dry joint, could be transformer or even scan coils but the banging bit points to dry joint, shouldnt be to expensive if you go to a good dealer, independants normaly cheaper and faster than your big stores

I think you need to turn it off quickly & get it to a repair shop. If you hit it enough, it may explode!!!
