I am, and have always been intrigued with Canada's beautiful land, cooler weather, and less self absorbed people. I want to uproot myself from here in the states, and become a complete full time resident of Ontario. Their website is obscure about immigration. I am curious to know the steps involved in becoming a citizen there in laymans terms.

I immigrated to Canada due to marriage. I wish I had not. They are very rude and outright hostile to Americans in the media in public. If you want to pursue this I now run site on the net
but first the official Canadian govt immigration site, vague or not is www.cic.gc.ca and learn more at www.international.gc.ca

or my new site at, just started it btw. Click to join USCanadianImmigrationEdInfoSource

Being an American does not help. You can immigrate independantly, be sponsored by family, ie spouse get a job, much harder to do, unless your are an artist, preacher or in a NAFTA related job. See my site for more info on NAFTA.

You become a landed or pr resident first then after 3 yrs you can apply for citizenship.

Immigration and citizenship rules are made by our federal government. I am not sure of all the rules but write to or find the website for the Government of Canada and then link to the Minister of Immigration. I am sure that all the info would be easiIy tracked down there. I think it is the same in the states, but in Canada, you are a "citizen" of the country, not the province or states. You are would be a "resident" of Ontario or which ever province you live in. Good luck. If you move here you would be in the best country in the world.
