Based on the information you provided it sounds as though she may have an anxiety disorder or a social anxiety disorder.
Be a help to her: encourage her, when you see her achieving or taking risks, compliment her on her skills and positive attributes, and be a friend--understand that she may deal with anxiety but that she has a lot to offer.
Remind her that everyone gets very nervous at times or share stories in which you felt afraid and vulnerable, and help to normalize anxiety for her so that she can pay less attention to the symptoms. The real joy in life is living!
Help her find the fun in life; try not to focus too much on her problems. This is a balance between respectfully listening to her and encouraging her to have joy and live life.
Its great that she has a caring friend.

Nervous attacks and anxiety are symptoms.Problem is they are symptomataic of a great many dis-orders. Could be any number of the bi-polar disorders to name a few. Serious problems all, I hope she returns to school as easily as possible. Be well.

Two years is very long for nervous disorders unless it was anorexia. Anorexia is mostly fatal but takes may years to end.
