film is so sensitive. if it is exposed to direct light, the images created in the film will all be exposed and be destroyed

Because the latent image on the film or paper is caused by light through the camera lens or enlarger lens. If you then let more light on to the film or paper, it will harm the image (called 'fogging' in English) so you carry out the development in a darkroom. By the way, a darkroom is rarely dark, you can use a special lamp to which the paper/film is not sensitive.
