1 stick of butter is 8 tablespoons, which equals 1/2 of a cup. Most sticks of butter are graded on the side with tablespoon measurments, so if the recipe calls for 4 tbs then just cut the stick at that mark. If you buy butter in the containers, those are 8 ounces but since they filled with whipped butter there's air in the product and it will not measure or cook the same. Always use stick butter when you can.
