There is no reason they can't, however pits have a very strong prey drive. You may have gotten your pup too late to override the prey drive with your pets. At this point you can teach the dog that the cats are not to be eaten, however I would not leave your dog with the cats by themselves. Usually by 2 - 3 months a dog has set their behaviors and all you can do after that is modify that existing behavior. If the pit was raised around small animals, you should be fine, but that does not guarantee anything.

My Fiance's friend had a pitbull and a cat that lived together with no problems for many years.. One day he came home, the dog had eaten the cat, there was blood everywhere...
He had no choice but to put the dog down.
If you want to have pets, this is not a good idea, even if it appears that they are getting along. In the end, it will probably turn out very badly. Sorry to say that because I really love all dogs but this is really a bad idea.

Your cats would take down a pit bull anyday.
I would be more scared for the dog to be honest,
let's face it one guy against two girls - OUCH!

you have to make the dog afraid of the cats. the best way is to put the cats in a position where they can get the dog(as in cause a small amount of pain ) but the dog can't fight back. with puppies i generally put the cat on a chair and the puppies are on the floor. they are polietly curious at first and that is perfect. the cat swings her paw down and scratches the puppy on the nose. and bingo, dog catious of cats. because your dog is older, you might want to hold him down and let the cats run all over him. but the best way to do it is to make hime afraid of the cats even if it means letting him get scratched up a bit. if he is afraid of cats, he won't chase them.
but in the case when your cats are afraid of the dog, it is harder. you have to make the cats feel dominant. you might just have to pick up the terrified cat and set him/her on the dog and let her scratch or something. it is nasty but would you rather end up with a dead cat?

This depends on the temperament of the dog and the training given to the dog by the trainer. Even the most massive of dogs have had small pets for friends.

it depends on the dogs personality. if it gets along with other dogs than you can probably work on him with the cats.
