The ocean in Marblehead, MA is really cold, i mean reeaaaally cold. Yet, I see pet owners tossing sticks into the water for the dogs to chase into the ocean and they do it. On new year's eve the water temp was so cold it hurt my finger. The water rarely even reaches 60 degrees in the hottest part of the summer. So, does anyone know if it is dangerous for our dogs?

As the name implies Goldens were bred by hunters for hunting. Retrieving out of cold water is as natural to them as waking up in the morning is.
There are many mornings during hunting season that our dogs "brake ice" inorder to retrieve a bird.

One Christmas, my sister brought her Golden to my parents' place on the Michigan shore. She threw a stick out over open water onto an ice floe; the dog swam out, retrieved it, and dried off by rolling in the snow. I find it difficult to suppose that the dog was having less than a wonderful time.

In the short term it can cause urinary infections and in the long term it will increase the chances of rhumatism. But hell they don't live very long anyway so they may at least have some fun

what kind are they? they most likely have lots of fur to keep them warm, and if they get too cold, they will come out.
