The Old Testament is horrifying.
Deuteronomy is the worst... if you want someone to love God, don't let them read Deuteronomy.
According to Deuteronomy, it's acceptable to stone your children if they misbehave, your wife if you find out she wasn't a virgin upon marriage, and your entire family if they try to convert you to another religion.
Nothing like a good old-fashioned stoning or two to warm your friends up to the Bible.
EDIT: The Bible DOES endorse slavery...
1 Peter 2:18
Slaves, you should obey your masters respectfully, not only those who are kind and reasonable but also those who are difficult to please.
1 Corinthians 7:21
Even if you have a chance of freedom, you should prefer to make full use of your condition as a slave.
Yes, it was the ways of the time, but if that isn't a big thumbs-up from God on slavery, I don't know what is...

You're actually asking 3 questions. 1."Is there a more despicable book than the old testament?" Yes, many. Try "Will to Power" Neitzche. It is a philosophical basis for the Nazis and the antithisis to the Bible. 2."How does this book have any respect anywhere?" It is respected among believers for the scarlett tread they see running through its entirety from "In the beginning" to "Amen" and it is respected among secular scholars as a powerfulforce that shaped western civilization. 3."What does anyone see in this book?" Why do you separate the old testament from the new? The Christ endorsed the Old Testament and quoted it often, as did Paul. If therefor you reject the Old Testament you reject the Bible in its entirety. I don't think you can even hope to get complete answers to your questions that could satisfy you in this forum and so I would give you this advice. Begin by readng the Gospels and let them inform your undertanding of the Old Testament.

The Old Testament is nothing like what you just described! Slavery was part of the culture back then, but the Bible does not endorse it in anyway. It setup guidelines that you should be kind to your slaves and even creating a year when all slaves were to go free no matter what.
The kings in the Old Testament are the real kings who ruled then. Some were good, some bad. Just as it has been since kings were invented. Those kings are no different then any other kings, ever.
And how can you even call the prophets perverted?
In answer to your untrue, offensive question: yes! There are many, many more despicable books then the Old Testament.

Try the book Necronomicon. Talk about a pile of s**t. If you're pissed at the OT, you'll hang yourself over that one.
