The Turkish Van cat, as well as the Burmese, actually like water and do swim in it when they have a chance. You can google these breeds to find out more.
Most cats dislike water, given that it makes their fur stick down and take forever to dry out. However if you start when a cat is young you can get them used to bathing them etc. Swimming is NOT something most breeds do for fun...see the exceptions above.
However tigers love water and swim a lot.

They can if they need to. The Turkish Van cat is in fact very fond of water, and likes to swim!

And you'll find that there are maverick cats who go against stereotypes and like to swim. An acquaintance of mine had access to a small island for her summer holidays, and would take her cats with her and let them run free (no traffic on it at all). One cat, now sadly deceased, was a keen huntress, including diving for water voles.

Yes cats can swim. Lions and cheetahs do not swim, but tigers do. There is even a domestic cat (Norwegian van cat) that like water from birth. They will get into a bathtub or pool all on their own.

Yes, they can swim.

Domesticated cats, however, have an aversion to putting themselves completely in water. Sure, most cats like to play in the toilet, or drink out of unusual water containers (my cat will only drink out of the swimming pool, a fountain, or water placed somewhere OTHER than in a dish on the floor!)

Scientists believe cats avoid water because thousands of years ago their ancestors avoided getting their fur wet at all costs, because they do not like being cold. This has passed on over the generations, and intinct tells them to avoid water, to avoid getting theirfur completely saturated!

Can they? Sure. Do they want to? Probably not.

"All cats can swim, and many are excellent fishermen. The ancient Egyptians used cats not only as hunters of mice but as catchers of fish as well. Some cats can and do swim for pleasure, and some--especially the tiger--can swim for long distances. Many cats, however, avoid water and will take to it only as a last resort when there is no other means of escape from a threatening enemy." http://lookd.com/cats/family.html

Cat's actually can swim but they do not perfer to because of a natural oil that is in their fur.The water gets into this and it just makes them feel awful. If they were to end up in the water just so you know they would be able to swim.Actually pretty fast.

They can, but they hate water, so will only swim when they really have to!
The exception to the hating water rule are Turkish Van cats... a breed of domestic cat that actually loves the water! (apparently).
Tigers love water too.

I AM A VET!!! Cats can swim if needed but don't ever put them in water and make them swim because they will not be happy. Only Turkish angoras enjoy water.

Not all cats, but there is a Hungarian cat that has very strong legs and can swim. But you could try and take your cat to a kiddy pool,(s)he could get used to it and adapt to learn to swim.

Yep. My previous cat loved water (to the extent that I had to lock the door when taking a bath otherwise she would jump in with me!) and would happily swim around in the sink or bath.
