Rarely. Usually, if one or the other suggests remaining friends, it is just to make the breakup easier. If one actually tries to renew a friendship, then yes, there is usually the hope that he/she wants to either become "friends with benefits" or didn't want the breakup to begin with.

i think it's possible but not easy. My ex and I are on very good terms, but it took awhile to get there. One motivation for us is that fact that we have kids together and it's not good for them to see mom and dad screaming at each other all the time.
There is no alterior motive between either of us. Both of us have moved on and are in new relationships.

Well let me tell you, my ex and I have been trying to be friends for about 5 years. It always becomes a roller coaster ride for me. We will be 'friends' and then all of a sudden he is in love with me cant do this and tries to have sex with me. Its crazy, until this Christmas he invited me over to his apartment I went over there, he tried to sleep with me and when I tried to tell him that I couldn't do this anymore he figured that would be the opportune time to let me know that he is engaged, to be married in JULY!! I was like, wow did you just suddenly remember that? Long story short....ex's are tricky and usually it doesnt work.
