About half of the high-end televisions I see have a native resolution of 1366X768. Others are touting "True 1080p" (which appears to be a native resolution at 1920X1080).

My question is -- does this stuff really matter? To the naked eye would a 1366X768 plasma or LCD look just as good as a "True 1080p"? Or are the extra pixels worth it? Obviously one can save a lot of money by going with the smaller resolution.

You won't notice any difference in sets that are under 36". In larger sets you might notice a slight difference. Especially if you watch TV up close. This only matters when it comes to watching HD programming & HD movies on a HD-DVD player or Blu-ray. Spending the extra money for 1080p is up to you. I always say that your own eyes are the best judges not other peoples opinion. Just visually compare the picture quality when you shop around. Stand the same distance away from the TV that you will be watching it at home.

The 768 sets have to downgrade the 1080 picture for your viewing whereas the 1080 sets don't need to do anything when viewing high-def content.
At close range, you will notice a difference, but at farther distances, it is doubtful.
I too am in the market for an HDTV set and I am leaning more toward the albeit more expensive 1080.
