petroleum jelly is used for a couple reasons lets check them out.

Prevent cuts/Abrasions - when you put layer of it on a fighters face it allows the glove to slide against it more easily. some say it lessens the impact of the punch and it may. However, the primary reason you want the glove to slide on the jelly is because dry leather gloves sliding on dry skin cause abrasions and cut way easier.

Stop bleeding - pack a cut with jelly and it works well to stop bleeding at least untill it gets wiped out by another blow.

It is just Vaseline. It is used to help keep the facial skin moist in an attempt to prevent from cutting or tearing while getting punched.

I always thought it was vaseline, and its used to cover a cut so it doesn't bleed all over the place. I could be wrong though.

petroleum jelly. this is basically to make the face slippery so the gloves when it hits wont scratch the face and give unnecessary wounds. You know when you hit someone with gloves on, the gloves tends to heat and also it makes cuts, like paper cuts, when it slides on a rough/dry surface.
