My Gordon Setter was spayed just about a month ago and has a bald patch at the base of her tail. This we can put down to hormones as chances are they're all over the place right now.

However, I've noticed today that her whole back seems to be covered in a dandruff type of stuff. Is this down to the hormones too?

And before it's mentioned, no she's not a puppy. She is 5 years old and had to be spayed as part of her treatment after suffering from Auto Immune Haemolytic Anaemia.

You will probably find that the spaying will have a massive effect on your dogs coat-it will get thicker & less shiney-the duller bits that will start growing through could be removed with handstripping or might just strip out if you groom enough.I would add a little oil to her food to combat the scurf.she may just be abit run down after the op.Have you had her anal glands checked?if they are full that can sometimes lead to skin problems - especially around the tail area.

This is very likely completely unrelated to the spay. It could be any number of things. The dandruff alone is very common and for the same reason that people get it, but coupled with hair loss could mean some issues that will require vet intervention.

Itchy places and hair loss could be mange. There are two types, one of which is VERY bad for the dog, there other is less bad and not catching.

use an anti dandruff shampoo and vinegar rinse that will get rid and help it not occur but it is probably hormones so ask your vet about it but the shampoo and vinegar rinse which gets rid of all shampoo residue and cleans the coat of dandruff will do in the meantime until you get a answer from your vet......it is better not to put anything in her to stop it as her body needs to regulate itself but shampoo and vinegar is not intrusive

bald patch is as likely to be an allergy to fleas or lice and it sounds like she has picked up lice if the 'scurf' moves.
