Warm milk.

Make yourself some plain warm milk, heat up 2 cups of milk in the microwave for about 40 seconds (just make it warm, not hot).

If you want to get really creative, you can add a dash of 'pumpkin spice' (you can get that at the grocery store), and a teaspoon of honey.

Don't have pumpkin spice? Use a dash of Cinnamon and a small, tiny pinch of nutmeg.

Also, try sleeping in complete darkness...

Additionally:
Normally, the production of melatonin by the pineal gland is inhibited by light and permitted by darkness. For this reason melatonin has been called "the hormone of darkness". The secretion of melatonin peaks in the middle of the night, and gradually falls during the second half of the night. Until recent history, humans in temperate climates were exposed to up to eighteen hours of darkness in the winter. In this modern world, artificial lighting typically reduces this to eight hours or less per day all year round. Even low light levels inhibit melatonin production to some extent, but over-illumination can create significant reduction in melatonin production.

Do you have an active lifestyle during the day or are you very passive. Also do you have any stress in your life.
Sleeping pills are not the answer to lack or disturbed sleep. If you are restless at night or if you wake up constantly, you might need to try exercizing after work and avoid food too late at night, right before sleeping. Also cut on cafeeine (coffee, tea, sodas...), try to have some warm milk (if you don't have any allergies to it)

I had the same problem only I take the prescription sleeping pills and don't think that helps me get a good night sleep. It helps me sleep but I wake up groggy. Then I got tested for sleep apnea and found out that's why I haven't been sleeping well. You might want to get tested for that. You might not be getting enough oxygen at night making it hard for you to sleep. Good Luck!

Try to keep so much activity out of the bedroom Exercise just a little before bed Ti Che or silent movements the warm milk and tea and herbs do that closer to dinner or before dinner. The timers for sents and music as you sleep is great if they work as you sleep. Avoid pills and do not get on them. They work like a dream but leave nightmare after effects...

Try an herbal medicine called valerian root. Two to three a half hour before bed. The only drawback is the smell. The pills smell like butt. They work wonderfully though with no side effects and are non-habitforming

Try some Melatonin. It's a synthesized version of a naturally occurring brain hormone that aids sleep. Good luck!

As the others suggested you might try melatonin. Also, if you are drinking any beverages containing caffeine, you need to avoid them. Might be that your body is very sensitive to caffeine. You might even want to try a soothing aromatherapy by your bedside. Good luck. It's miserable when you can't get a good night's sleep.

I didn't want to take meds either, but finally went to a therapist and got on anti-depressants, very low dose, worked like a charm. If you are not sleeping there is something WRONG
