Yes, certainly. Either methane (a gas) or methanol (a liquid) would make an excellent fuel for a S.I. engine. If, however, you are proposing that they be used as a 'stand-in' for petrol, you must ask yourself where they are to be obtained in adequate quantity! Methane does occur naturally but usually mixed with other gases, methanol is manufactured but the process itself consumes energy.

Methane can be used as a motor fuel. For example: VOLVO is already using methane in its VOLVO's S-60 methane burning car.

Methanol can also be used as motor fuel. It has been seen as a possible large volume motor fuel substitute at various times during gasoline shortages.

Both are categorized under Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).

yes they are being used now as CNG.
or better still they can use ethanol.
it is done in south america.
yes they can be used as they basically have the same properties of petrol.
