Yeah, it's your turn! There was a time in the US when everyone of male gender had an obligation to serve this country. Now it seems, everyone believes we can get by with an all volunteer military. It's true the navy and air force bode nicely with this concept, after all, it's these two branches that have suffered less in recent military campaigns, in terms of casualties.

The army and Marines have a much larger challenge, and one they, or the Pentagon have brought on themselves. I will take a moment to give them food for thought on a possible solution to this crises. The crises being personnel shortage.

It seems, the military has discounted young people who have dropped out of school as being unfit for duty. These people are told, if they do this, this, and this, they can come back and re- qualify. Some do, many don't.

It seems to me that if the Pentagon has so much money to toss around, offering higher education for new recruits, etc., they could take that same money and use it by accepting these drop outs, and school them, in service, to the levels they need them to be. This would be a mandatory program, and we all know that all these youngsters need is a little gentle, or not so gentle persuasion, to get them motivated.

I believe that everyone would benefit by this: The Pentagon would tap a resource they had abandoned in the past, the drop outs would get a 2nd chance in life, the services would have additional personnel to draw from, and a great product will be produced from the scrapes of society. This would be a great nickname for these people and I think they'd love it, S_C_R A_P_E_S!

Are you asking if you should join the military? Or if I am joining the military? In either case my answer would be no. However you should make whatever decision you feel is right. Just keep in mind that if you are being recruited, all branches of the military and especially the army are having difficulty meeting recruitment quotas and are desperate. They have a sales pitch and, like any other salesperson, recruiters choose to play up and exaggerate any positive aspects while choosing not to mention things that might not be so attractive. Before you sign anything do lots of research, talk to lots of people, and take everything a recruiter tells you with a grain of salt. Remember that unlike other contracts, once you join the army you lose your civil rights and you are not allowed to quit. As many people have found out, the fact that the terms were misrepresented and failure to mention little clauses like "you are signing up for one year, but if we decide to make you do another year in a combat zone, you must go" doesn't give you any right to get out. Therefore, consider very carefully what you want to do and why, and see if there are other ways that you can get an education, help your community and your country, and take care of your family which do not involve you killing, or being killed, or not seeing your family for years, and that let you quit if you decide you don't like it.

I think it was the best thing I ever did. Make sure that the branch you join is a good fit for you if you are considering joining.
