Pankration is the world oldest known fighting style it dates back to almost 500bc. Probably older....

Although alot of the main arts in China came from India. There is no proof or time slots showing how far back Indian arts go.
For example Shaolin was brought to China in about 500AD.
That's 1000 years before so is it fair to say that the art or others did not exist in India in 500 bc or ealier, no it's not but unfortunatly the history books only show the dates for Pankration.

Martial arts originated the first time a humanoid hit another. Every culture has developed its own forms of combat and fighting.

Legends in the oriental martial arts talk about the origins with the Budidahrma bringing the martial arts of India into China and teaching the monks there. But even then, they were merged with the already existing skills that were used to fight in that area.

Every culture has some form of martial art , the oldest records of any specific training would be from Africa . Not Japan, China, India, or Greece. The oldest records of any formalized martial arts come from the cradle of humanity itself , Egypt .
It is believed that other cultures from Africa also had martial arts systems , but none have been recorded .
As humanity spread accross the world so did the usage of martial arts . Some where created , others were adaptations on earlier arts .

I agree with Judoka, the oldest recorded martial art is Pancrase. As far a oriental martial arts, there is a debate between India and korea. While india is widely accepted as the birthplace of Martial Arts with Bodidharma new archaeological investigations suggest that some forms of korean foot fighting practiced by the ancient inhabitants of the korean Peninsua predate Bodidharma by as much as 300 years.

Several people fought each other over time, long, long ago.

*The winners taught their techniques to those people who were important to them (i.e., family/clan members, soldiers, etc.).

*These techniques became refined over time within the geographic region they were practiced, influenced by climatic/physiological/religious, and political events.

Each region of the world really does have a martial art associated with it, and many (but not all) of them really did originate from their cultures' equivalent of "Og" the caveman.

Read Chinese history on Wikipedia.
