Mormons dont go out and marry 50 teenagers. the idea behind multiple wives is this:

Mary and tom have 3 kids. Bill and Sally have 3 kids. Tom dies and Mary is now a widow with 3 children. Bill and Sally welcome them into thier family, Bill and Mary may or may not marry.
This is a concept of brotherhood. If Mary were to be left alone, then she would have a terrible time raising 3 kids on her own with just her pay. Other congregants reach out to help in a more permanant fashion than throwing cash as someone once or twice. Its actually a good concept. Mary does have a choice though. She can chose to become and addition to Bill and Sallys family, or George and jans or stay by herself. Its a means of taking care of eachother.
