The more intelligent the bird, the more attention they require.
Whether or not one is a better pet than the other is up to you. It you want a pet that is easy to take care of with little attention, then the parakeet is you answer. If you want an engaging pet with an insatiable desire for interaction, then a parrot is the answer.

Parakeets are not the brightest, so they often do not come with interesting personalities, but they are super easy to take care of, and can be fun if they are really trained.

Parrots, on the other hand, are too smart for their own good and can wreak havoc in your life because they are notoriously known to be the equivalent of a 2 year old human baby, for the entirety of it's lifespan (parrots usually live for 30-50 years). Just like a 2 year old, they require LOTS of attention, but unlike a 2 year old they will never grow out of it.

If you are looking for a bird that is not so high maintenance but still interesting, a cockatiel might be right for you, but if you are looking for a bird that is smart like a parrot but not as high maintenance as a parrot is then you should go for a parrotlet (they are know as the big parrot personality in the little bird's body).

I previously had cockatiels and am now in the market for a parrotlet because I am looking for the extra personality, minus the extra maintenance.

good luck!

That's a loaded question, since the answer will be as individual as you are.

Parakeets are wonderful pets, as long as they are provided a roomy home, lots of toys to play with, and given plenty of attention when you are home. They remain one of the more inexpensive pets to own, once you have them established. However, they can be rather limited in what you can do with them. They can be taught to speak, but it's rarely very clear.....they can even be taught a few tricks if you put a great deal of effort into it.

Parrots, on the other hand, are much higher maintenance (cage, food, toy cost), but they are also much more intellegent beings (most parrots have the mental capability of a 4-5 year old child). Your interaction with them will be more rewarding, since they can do more than imitate......they will actually talk with you, once you get them started, and play with you in a proactive way.

Parakeets have an average lifespan of about 3 years (that's based on the average of a captive bred bird). Parrots, on the other hand, have an average lifespan of well over 30-40 years....some have lived long enough to have been passed to a persons children.

What this all boils down to is how much time and money you are willing to invest. Any pet is a great responsibility.......you are caring for another life, and that means you are the one who ultimately needs to decided what is right for you.

Personally I believe smaller parrots and parrkeets are better house pets, but that's just for me in my situation.

I don't have a large enough house for any sort of large parrot to fly around enough to make it happy.

My budgies, however, find that bird room is perfectly large enough. They fly, glide, climb, swoop and dive bomb all day long. It can be a little strange to walk into the room and have a little blue blur fly 5 cms above your head, but it's an experience I love!

I also enjoy the smaller parrots more as I am never scared of being bitten or of having to fork over large sums of money because they have destroyed something in the house (although budgie do chew a lot, generally it's not quite so noticeable...)

yes. Parrots usually need alot of attention and they also expensive. Parakeets are good starter birds since they require very little. If you are experienced with birds than a parrot is alright but if not parakeets are the ideal pet birds for you.

I have had both types of birds and I prefer parakeets Because they are easier to clean up after and cause a lot less trouble in the house. Parrots are wonderful birds and highly intelligent. You just have to be prepared to do a lot more cleaning and maintenance to take care of them.

Always better to start with a smaller pet and work your way up.

properly, I take my conure (small parrot) tonnes of places with me in the process the summer season time, and he easily loves people. I extremely have discovered his is extra social than a parakeet that I before owned. He has certainly one of those character too. He can very almost act like a canines in specific circumstances it fairly is cute. He likes to snuggle, and be puppy throughout, which i found differed from parakeets. My parakeet fairly did not prefer to be touched, yet my parrot does. One downside already reported, is that parrots fee so much better than parakeets. and that they take far extra time. Parrots are soo in contact in appealing you that they are very almost like canines and want the time, attempt and interest. yet on the up area, parrots are extra wide-spread for speaking than parakeets ,and have far extra approach (which I propose in a sturdy way). you extremely purely might desire to locate the poultry that suits your existence superb. A parrot isn't a one month puppy, as they get soo related to their people. and that they have got a tendency to stay a lot longer than parakeets, so its a dedication which would be for ninety years, or 35 in case you get a conure.

In some ways, yes. They're smaller and significantly less expensive. Great for a beginning bird owner. Parrots are just as nice in a house, but most types of parrot are only good for serious owners.

it depends on the people and animals in the house and how big the house is . if the house is big with people over 10 a parrot , if there is small chidren or other pets a parracet so it can fly away from other pets.
