Whatever he rode on to go to a town was named Friday. When he came back he rode on something named Sunday. A horse I'm guessing.

Maybe it took him two days to get back? He stayed 7 days, set off the following Friday but only returned back on Sunday.
Edit: Wish I'd seen Bicycle Repairman's answer before I posted, it sounds right to me!

He left on Friday, arrived on Saturday, then left again the next Saturday (that's 7days) and arrived on Sunday.
