Isn't that the truth! I'm an American living abroad, and it still amazes me when I eat vegetables and fruits to savor how delicious they are. I don't know why American fruits and vegetables are the way they are, but I think that most Americans don't care because they probably don't know what a tomato and a carrot and a peach should really taste like, and does elsewhere.

Because they are picked up when they are still green, and get ripe in the trucks. Fruits and vegetables sell when they look good, not when they taste good. You can make the taste better by choosing produce that was grown in your area (buy local when possible), and choose produce that is in season, even if that means buying from other countries for some time of the year. For the best taste, grow it yourself...

They don't know any better! Seriously. When I went to Europe for the first time, I couldn't believe how wonderfully tasty, yet unattractive the fruits and vegetables were. I've since learned that American farmers find that larger and more attractive produce (with longer shelf lives) sells better, so over time our produce here has gotten larger and larger and more lovely and yet----tasteless.
The growing popularity of organic food has made a big difference. Some markets even carry heirloom fruits and vegetables which are scrumptious. Americans are starting to educate their palates more. It's wonderful.

They are picked too early so that they can be shipped across the country without rotting. Most Americans don't know any different. A lot do, however, and that is why every grocery store has an organic section anymore.

Because they are picked prematurely, grown for their looks and not their taste, are shipped long distances, and sometimes exposed to temperatures that alter the flavor and texture as well. Locally grown always seems to taste better, and we really don't have much of that going on. :-(
When I lived in Mexico, everything tasted so GOOD!!!

American produce is genetically engineered to be appetizing to us americans so it will sell easily.
So, I guess we all like the taste of carboard (according to you).
And incidently, I have my own produce I grow in my backyard. I grew true cantaloupes and can see why we americans like musk melons better.
