This guy is interested in me but instead of striking up a friendly conversation or breaking the ice betn us (as we r just distant colleagues) he spreads the word around town that he finds me very attractive...he does not tell me directly and is very evasisve when try to make a converstaion...now the whole world knows what he thinks about me and so do i...through them...why cant he express things directly to me so we can take i from there?

He is imtimidated. That is all. Confident women usually do not get approached nearly as often as women who are not. Men just have this fear of being rejected by the most beautiful women around or they feel like they would never have a chance. So what we do is we plant feelers out knowing that the word will get back to you. When it does only two things can happen. Either you are excited and approach him ( meaning he may not get rejected) or you just go on with your life as if because you are not attracted to him. It is a way of putting the ball in your court. Deep down he is not as sure of himself as he appears to be.

Next time you see him, walk up to him in a friendly way and say, "My friends are telling me that you find me attractive. Is that right?" I'll bet that will get him talking!
Don't worry about him expressing things to you. If you want to date him, do. If you don't, just talk to him about his comments. If you won't date him, tell him that next time he wants to date someone, he needs to talk to them directly.

He is obviously shy about approaching you. He is essentially hoping that by spreading the word that he fancies you that you will get to hear about it and do the hard bit and approach him - ie make it easy for him.
You need to decide if you want to be with him and whether you want it enough to make it happen.
