The most common reasons for nose bleeds are (1) trauma (for example, by picking or rubbing your nose) and (2) excessive dryness (usually due to dry weather), which may chap the nasal tissues.
Tumors of the nasal cavity and tumors of the sinuses can also cause nose bleeds. Danger signs that suggest the possibility of tumor include:
Nose bleeds which recur over the course of a few months
Nose bleeds associated with any of the following:
loose teeth, numb facial skin, a change in vision, a change in occlusion (the way your teeth meet), or any deformity of the facial contour
If any of these symptoms are present, bring this to your doctor's attention at once!
If a doctor has determined that your nose bleeds are due to one of the common benign reasons (trauma or dry weather), you can help prevent further nose bleeds by observing the following precautions:
Needless to say, DON'T PICK YOUR BLOODY NOSE! (Pun intended.)
Do not lift any heavy objects (more than 20 pounds); do not strain or bend over for long periods. Do not strain at bowel movements; take a fiber supplement or a laxative, if necessary.
Do not forcefully blow your nose.
Sneeze with your mouth open (this will reduce the force of the sneeze).
Keep your nose moist. A salt water solution (Ocean, Ayr or NaSal are easily obtainable brands in the USA) may be sprayed in each nostril every 2 to 3 hours, or as often as necessary. Ayr Gel is an excellent product as well.
[Some products available without prescription are, as of this writing (2005), a bit too new to evaluate. NasalCease and QR powder are two examples. I'm still waiting to hear what my patients think of these products.]
Consider buying a humidifier for your bedroom, especially if your house is very dry. Use it at night. For added moisture, you could spray with nasal saline or use Ayr Gel.
If you develop a nose bleed, rest quietly on a couch while applying firm, gentle pressure to your nose. Do this by pinching your nose between your thumb and forefinger. Hold pressure for 5 to 7 minutes. If the bleeding continues, gently blow the clots from your nose, then spray each nostril with Afrin (generic: oxymetazoline) or Neosynephrine (generic: phenylephrine). (This assumes your doctor has cleared you to use these medications.) Hold pressure again for 5 to 7 minutes. If necessary, you may repeat the spray 15 minutes after the first spray. If the bleeding continues, seek medical attention at once.
BEST WAY..... HOLD THE BRIDGE OF YOUR NOSE FOR 5 MIN

Hi i used to get nose bleed really bad and severe they just used to happen for no reason i use to be talking then blood just can gushing out. Have you had your sinuses checked? I take some antihistamines now and i dont get any nose bleeds.
I found the way to stop my nose bleeds was too lean over the sink bathroom/ kitchen and keep pouring cold water on my nose, this way it stops the flow and the blood goes down the sink. After a few minute i found the flow of blood coming out of my nose would drop and stop after a few minutes. But try not to poke your finger in your nose to get blood clots out as you could start if off again. But maybe you have got a blood clot if you get it out when your nose starts to bleed then it will stop.

The best way is to pinch the bridge of your nose and put your head forward (never back), would also advise you to make a trip to doctors if you have them regulary as the blood vessels in the nose may be weak, the doctor can sometimes give nose drops for this,,, good luck, if ur nose bleed lasts for more than 2 hrs and is not stopping u need to seek medical advice a,s,a,p, good luck hope this helps xxx

To stop it lean forward in a sitting position and pinch just below the bridge. Do not ever lean your head backwards. If it continues for too long then see a doctor or go to an A&E dept. If you have a lot of nose bleeds and there is no underlying cause then it can be cauterised.

Per my doctor.... put a couple pieces of ice in a wash cloth and place it under your top lip up against the bottom of your nose and hold it there. It slows the blood way down until it eventually stops! Works!! :)

Keep you held down and pinch the end of your nose with a tissue quite hard for about ten minutes. That should stem the flow.

For starters, never hold your head back. Pinch your nose shut, and sit forward until it stops. Your nose inside is too dry. Use vicks in it everyday to keep it moist. Drs may have another ointment they prefer you to use.

yeah - i get them too...first of all...don't worry...worrying while youre bleeding raises your blood pressure and will make you bleed faster and more....folding a kleenex and sticking it under your top lip...so your top lips sticks out...and pinching the bridge of your nose helpsme...if it doesn't stop after 10min head to the hospital to have it cotterized...keep your nose moist, don't pick it, use vasaline inside to keep it moist and use a humidifier to keep the air moist.

check with nutritionist as might be sign of vitamin K deficiency as vit K is playing major role in blood clothing. Vit K is produced in our gut but if you suffer from Yeats infection or had recently antibiotics then you may not be able to produce your own one!
