I would have to say that art is a craft, you struggle to get by in the begining but its something you love and your good at it! Politics is a art of lying and you lie to get to the top while brutally killing someone with words, buring them up to their necks and sometimes even physically knocking someone off but you're crafty and you enjoy it because your good at it, its a risky business just like gangsterism. Gangsterism they stick together with their own kind, sometimes they're born into it and they kill even their own kind. In this business you've gots to trust everyone and trust no one. Art, politics and gangsterism... all a craft.

I hope this helped you out some... take care sweetie!

E.L. Doctorow wrote "Ragtime" which was a very influential book about life in the Roaring 20's. During that time, many Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants came here and could not get jobs or decent living and were perceived as scum and thus could not assimilate into "American" culture no matter how hard they tried. However, by forming gangs of organized crime, these ethnic groups gained power, respect, and noteriety, much like artists (who live on the fringe as well many times) or politicians (who are often nobody's/crooks who come up and take over).

The book Ragtime would give you a good idea of how to explain the quote if you are doing a paper on it. Or, go rent the movie.
