As used in sports,where did the expression "upset" come from?

Dictionary definites "upset" used in sports :
A game or contest in which the favorite is defeated.
I assume that when somebody thinks to be the winner and then he looses he is indeed "upset" and hence the probable origin of the expressions.
I couldn't find any different explanation
