I've found that just stomping on an aluminum can produces inconsistent results. Instead, start the crushing process by making a dent all the way around the middle of the can. Then place the slightly dented can between your hands and press it together with a slight twisting motion.
You will now have a partially crushed can about 1/4 the size of the original can. To finish the job, stand the can on its end and stomp on it, leaving you with a nice flat circular disk.

1. Place the can on its end on a hard surface
2. Stamp down with your heel on the top end of the can.
3. Job done!
There is no cheaper way, all it costs you are the calories needed to raise and lower your foot. Plus, it's incredibly satisfying to feel that crunch underfoot!

Put them on a hard surface and step down on them hard. If returning to get deposits, some outlets will not take the crushed cans because they go by the whole can and know roughly how many can fill a bag ????????
