I think that IF what the government had told us was true AND they actually had a plan we would have been ok...it would have been a success...but since neither of those are true...there were no WMD and they DID NOT have a plan...so I think as of now it is a HUGE failure!!

Hopefully they can get it straightened out.

It all depends on what you think the objectives were.

Militarily, the mission was (not "is" as there is no longer a military mission there) a huge success. W's inability to make a decision (go 100% with Rummy or 100% with Powell) has led to a pretty sad and expensive policing and welfare action and that has tarnished how effective "shock and awe" was.

Militarily, the current policing action is also a phenomenal success in that it goes to show yet again that the U.S. Military, while the mightiest in the world by far, is the most expensive and bureaucratic military organization in the history of the world and is simply not the answer for peacekeeping, training, ambassadorial missions. This is actually Rummy's parting shot at all of the DOD left overs who still think any economy in the world can afford a 500,000 US troops in any theater. Sadly, these same losers who lost Vietnam are trying very hard to put things back to where they were before.

Politically, the mission has failed but only because W hasn't shown the backbone to put annoying gnats in line (how many times will W let the weasels at State call of an assault on falluja just as the Marines are ready to finish the job?). Oddly enough, while most people hear the "George is an idiot" shrill from the left, it is the neocons and their money that have deserted W for having the same rubber band backbone as his daddy (whose claim to fame was really getting shot down by a third rate zero pilot over the pacific ocean).

It's an utter failure, militarily we are winning soundly, but politically the war is a disaster, just like Vietnam. Soldiers die, that's a fact and our soldiers have killed far more than they have been killed. The problem when combating a guerrilla force is that to win they don't actually have to win, they just don't have to lose, while we must win conventionally. And with the governments utter...abuse of power, misleading of the public, corruption, treason...there's not even a word for the BS they have commited, the overwhelming majority of American people do not support the war. I support our troops but those in charge of them are wasting lives, time, and money for a cause which is only important due to the hole they have dug for all of us.

The US commanders should have read "The Art of War" then maybe we wouldn't be in this predicament, but even if they had had a better plan the hate mongers in the Muslim world would have still succeeded by distorting true Islam and "preaching" their message to the poor, uneducated, impressionable people of the Middle East and labeling it as "Allah's will"

Unfortunately the condition in Iraq is worsening. The Sunnis are fighting the Shiites and mass murder is going on. We can't stop it, nor should we try. Many Muslims blame the US for this horrible condition and in a way they are right. If we had not invaded Iraq there would be no fighting because Saddam would have murdered both sides to stop the fight However, we are there and what do we do to stop the fighting? Nothing. Let them fight and have their fun. They have been doing it for years and we should not become involved in a religious/power grabbing fight. According to the Qu'ran this fighting is forbidden. Are we supposed to become the ones to enforce the words of the Qu'ran? Other Muslim countries should make them stop the fighting but they don't budge. Not a single word from any of them. We are dealing with a group of sly and slippery people and we should get the hell out of there.

The US has a long history of similar situations, with mixed results, but the answer is usually not clear for some time. Missed opportunities and changes of public opinion abound. Look at the Philippines and Vietnam as opposite poles. These things are almost always winnable, but whether the country think it's worth it is the question. That region is important enough that Ms. Rice seems to have it right in judging it's "worth the investment."

No one in his right mind would call the present situation in Iraq a success.

its a big success, we r killing the terrorists leaders, putting a democracy in iraq like we did to afghanistan, and only 3000 soldiers lsot their life in this war, its a sad thing but they r dying for their nation, there have been over 600,000 civilian deaths in iraq during this war, 400,000 were not deaths by the american soldiers, so whos killing all of the iraqi people, the iraqi terrorists r killing theire own people, if we werent over their then teoorists would be over here in the US cutting everyones head offs and ruling this country then that would be the day that the democrats would be happy
