Every dog owner should have a good dog ear cleaning solution at home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

look out for good brands, like pet horizon's earrific, virbac, ppp, etc. Ask your trusted pet shop person for help.

Just follow the instructions, which usually tell you to fill up the ear canal with the solution and massage the ear base for a minute or 2, then let your dog shake its head to get the liquid out.

If your dog is like mine, which doesn't allow me to do the above, you can soak up the cotton ball or pad with the solution and wipe and squeeze as much as u can into the ear.

If your dog has ear infection (alot of dark discharge, digging ear with paws and shaking head), clean it daily until it clears up. Then do it weekly, especially after bath and swimming, because water will get into the ears and cause infections.

If you want, you can put some ear powder, some of the products already have powder inside (earrific).

Cheers!

This works best. Get some round cotton make-up remover pads and buy some ear cleaning solution from the vet. Put a bit of the solution on the pad and stand behind the dog and flip his ear up and put the cotton pad down into this ear canal and basically scoop around to get the gunky stuff. It's black and gross. If there is a lot it might mean he has an infection. Be gentle. Also, if he is only 8 months old, he will not like this but will not mind it over time. For the next year or so you will have to get someone to hold him firmly while you clean the ears. I always talk to my lab when I clean her ears in a soft voice and she always gets a cookie afterwards, so now she doesn't mind so much (She's 4 1/2)

if they are smelly, with a strong odor and an unusual discharge, take the dog to the vet to get treated for a possible infection. then, you can follow up with daily ear cleaning. you can buy any ear cleaner that is alcohol based, or even use a little but of rubbing alcohol. do not use q-tips. use cotton balls. do not put anything in the ear down into the canal past where you can see. if you do so, you can actually pack down the ear dirt and wax further down into the canal.

never use cotton swabs, cotton balls is the best to use. use a solution of white vinegar and water to do it and do not go very far down in the ear as you can rupture the ear canal. dogs get yeast infections in the ears and the vinegar is good for killing the yeast.

a trip to the vet would be advisable to have the ear checked out, food allergies are a big factor in ear infections also...............

Do you know why they smell? If you have not taken the dog to a vet to determine the cause yet, you need to do that NOW! Your dog could have a very bad infection which could cause them to lose their hearing or worse.

You should never use people products on pets unless specifically told to do so by a vet. People pH is different from animal pH and you could cause additional problems for the animal.

I agree with member: Reality Check.. The Vet trained us and out housekeeper how to clean our Cocker Spaniels ears and which products to use. His ears don't smell now and the House Keeper now has a side line..cleaning dogs ears for her other clients!

You dog may have an ear infection or fungus in his ears. It took many trips to the vet before it was finally cured.

The only thing that finally cured it was: Novolexin 250Mg. All the ointments were messy and never did anything...it took the caplet to do it.

Use the same thing we use to wipe our ears (a ear bud). There is also a special kind of liquid which comes in which you can dip the bud and then clean your dogs ears so that they don't smell.

Honestly, you should take your pooch to the vet and ask a trained vet how to do it. The ear, as you probably know is a very sensitive area and can be very dangerous for dogs when people don't know what they are doing. Spend the $30 and have a trained vet train you. Your dog will thank you.
