Being nice to people is just common courtesy; nothing more. Staring at you during class means he's thinking about you, but maybe not in the way you hope.
If you want to know, the only way to find out is to ask him flat out. You just need to build up the composure, go in guns blazing, and ask: "Do you like me?" You don't have to be forceful in your approach; act flattered. If he says "no" to cover up, just do something like: "Oh, that's too bad.... I was hoping you did."
